Liz Lawrence released really great albums in 2019 and 2021. A songwriter of depth, honesty and humility without forgetting we all need a little pop music in our lives, particularly in these hard times. Genuinely Liz Lawrence is proving to be a cut above and we’re delighted to welcome her band to The Crescent for the first time.

Blackaby

William Blackaby’s songs are a blend of folk, indie and rock influences, tracing the confusing journey of childhood and personal growth. His is music about steadily coming to terms with yourself, where you’ve been, and where you might be heading. Starting out as a drummer before acting as the songwriter in his last band, William took up using his surname to stand front and centre, while making “the conscious decision to be less poetic” with his lyrics.

At odds with the traditional romanticisation of song writing, it’s a statement of intent that marks him out as a unique songwriter, whose words get straight under your skin. His two EPs have been pressed together onto 12” vinyl and, with an earthy sound influenced by the likes of Big Thief, Wilco and Paul Simon, has received support from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac, Jack Saunders and Gemma Bradley, BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens and Tom Robinson, plus DIY, So Young, NME, Clash, Line of Best Fit, For The Rabbits and many more.
