Borrowing from popular culture, the italicised Futura Oblique font inside a red box has become something of a status symbol if owned in its “Supreme” format, but as with the majority of their work (up to a certain point) is a direct lift from someone else. In this instance Barbara Kruger, who dropped out of design school in the mid 1960’s. In a 1981 art show titled “Public Address”, Kruger debuted white Futura text in a red box over a black and white image for the very first time, to collage anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian maxims over 1950s advertising-style black-and-white photographs.
