Delighted to announce a new collaborative project between Ouroboros, Jazz in York and the Basement Jazz Club, with support from Help Musicians UK. OUR.JAZZ will focus on improving gender and racial diversity in Jazz, with a series of gigs, workshops and talks around York over the next year. Stay tuned for more!

Arun Ghosh (who graced the September cover of Jazzwise!) joins us for our first show, with support from Archipelago, one of the hottest jazz-rock bands in the North, led by the talented Faye MacCalman.

Clarinettist and composer Arun Ghosh is delighted to bring his band to The Crescent as part of a national tour, performing music from his new album, But Where Are You Really From? Winner of ‘Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year’ at the 2014 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, Arun is a leading light on UK and international jazz scenes, captivating audiences and critics with his passionate and dynamic performance style, eloquent musical expression and a charismatic rock ‘n’ roll spirit.

But Where Are You Really From? was recorded in Manchester and London. Its song-like structures and psychedelic textures evoke a sonic space where Alice Coltrane meets the Stone Roses, Spiritualized and The Velvet Underground. Propelled by a hard driving rhythm section, and supported by the multi-layered guitar of Shirley Tetteh (Nérija), Arun’s celebrated lyricism, melodic outpourings and freewheeling improvisations become passionate and intensely emotional ‘songs without words’.

Arun Ghosh – clarinet
Chris Williams – alto saxophone
Shirley Tetteh – electric guitar
Liran Donin – bass
Tansay Omar – drums

“…uproarious and irresistible” – Daily Telegraph
“…an upfront mix of South Asian melodies and western street-grooves…” – The Guardian
“…extraordinary charisma and musicianship and a consistently riveting compositional skill” –
Jazzwise

Archipelago are a reeds/bass/drums trio from Newcastle upon Tyne. Movable blocks of sound; riffs, silence, noise, grooves and improvisation are brought together, placed alongside or layered across each other. The Archipelago sound fuses jazz, garage-rock and the avant garde into a fluid collage, somewhere between the fixed and the floating.
