Cowgirl are a rock and roll band from York led by songwriters Danny Trew Barton and Sam Coates. Joined by Jack Holdstock on drums and Tom Robinson on bass, the quartet play big-riff garage rock with a laconic swagger. They have thus far released two singers; recent snotty smash ’You’re Not There’ and the grunge-y rocker ’She Picks Me Up’.
In support we welcome J Fernandez and his four piece band to York for the first time. A Chicago based home recording project started by Arkansas Justin Fernandez who’s to date released three EPs and most recently their second album, the fabulous ‘Occasional Din’.
Also a huge treat to have Rory open the gig. Rory is in the band Middle Child (previously Worm) and writes wicked bedroom pop songs.
J Fernandez Press:
‘J. Fernandez draws on the motoric patterns of bands like Stereolab and the shifty meters of progressive rock in songs that were modest on the surface but gently insistent. Proudly intelligent indie-rock’
New York Times
‘Fernandez is conjuring sensations I’ve felt before on Broadcast records and in some of the darker corners of the Elephant 6 collective, but his sound is distinctly his own. I’m starting to think this guy is incapable of making a bad song.’
Stereogum
‘Fernandez’ tunes have an endearing air of fragility. The beautiful close ‘Melting Down’ recalls Yo La Tengo at their quietest, pulling warm melodies from the loops of discordant minimalism’
