Back in April 2019, 22a label founder and multi instrumentalist Tenderlonious travelled to Lahore in Pakistan to take part in some improvised recording sessions with a Pakistani instrumental quartet called ‘Jaubi’. Two albums came from those recording sessions that have been met with mass acclaim. The music has been described as East meets West – Spiritual, Indian jazz-fusion and psychedelic ragas with nods to golden era hip hop.
Both albums were featured as The Guardian ‘Global Album Of The Month’ and were included in The Guardian’s albums of the year lists in 2020 and 2021 respectively. They also received coverage and support from some of the world’s key tastemakers and publications, such as; Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Gilles Peterson, Jamz Supernova, Tom Ravenscroft, Mr Scruff, Jazzwise, Mojo and many more….
Following the success of these two recordings, the dream has always been for Jaubi to come to the U.K. to perform and record new music. In August of this year that dream is becoming a reality. Jaubi and Tenderlonious will be performing a headline London show at The Union Chapel on the 18th August thanks to the support of Chalo and The British Council, followed by some select regional shows and a weeks recording session at Real World studios.
