We finish our little corner of Independent Venue Week with a great triple bill on the floor in The Crescent.

At his monthly session down The Golden Ball, Rowan found his perfect musical companions. Multi-instrumentalist Jack Woods rips on guitar, banjo, fiddle and more, bassist Ollie Howland and one of a seemingly revolving cast of drummers lay it down. Leaving Rowan to bash the crap out of an acoustic guitar and shake the songs from his soul. Sometimes they’re comical, sometimes rousing and melodic, often tends and always heartfelt, Rowan really is a great songwriter and this is a wicked band.

Rory & The Nature Kids have blown us away on each of the four times we’ve seem them recently, wordy and propulsive college-rock songs like a Yorkshire Songs:Ohia or maybe something less intimidating. Frank Lloyd Wleft joins us for the first time venturing up specially from London Town and sounds great – like they’ve already been in a legendary punk band but kicked the habit, realised it’s easier on yer own and do what every good punk ends up doing – falling in love with country music.

Rowan bio:

Rowan is a Coventry-born singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist living in York. He performs on his own and with a band across venues around the North of England. His songs are sometimes dark, often humourous, but always poignant – with influences ranging from traditional folk to alternative rock, and sometimes even electronica.

I’m 2021 he released a five-minute collection of 9 short songs called ‘a song’ (as ‘Rowan Evans’). And since then he’s been working on 100s of new normal length songs and recording a few of them in Amsterdam and York. ‘Hammer, Jigsaw, Screwdriver’ is the first of these to be released as a single, and is probably his third song that is about tools.
