Three of our very favourite Please Please You acts together in The Crescent at the end of June. We’re celebrating The Illness’ great new EP release together with most of the fab Rory & The Nature Kids and three of great psych-folk trio Zandra.

The Illness are a musical group from the North of England based primarily in York and Liverpool but with a preference for collaboration across various cities and continents. Their first 12″ single ‘Decending G / Phrases Redacted’ released during the covid lockdown of 2020 featured Pavement/Silver Jews members Steve West and Bob Nastanovich, was played heavily by Marc Riley on BBC Radio 6 Music and featured in his end of year list.

Summerase is a quadruple A side featuring multiple contributors including Laura J Martin (Static Caravan/Wyndow) and Dbh (Thread Recordings/Irma Vep) amongst many others. Each track essentially being played by completely different line-up serves to better represent the band’s varying influences, whilst always being built around the same core 4-piece band to maintain a consistant thread.

Opening track ‘Everybody Knows That I’m A Fool’ is an immediate 3-minute rocker that gets to the point quickly and doesn’t stick around. As charming as it is messy, in a similar style to Ronald Jones ra Flaming Lips.

‘Alone/Aline’ goes on a sci-fi headtrip, filtering La Düsseldorf through The Rah Band along the way.

‘I Was A Quarrelsome Youth’ is a brief, dreamlike tale in the vein of Smog/Bill Callahan or Papa M.

EP closer ‘Summerase’ employs a complex wistfulness reminiscent of The Delgados, Eggstone or early Cardigans.

The Illness will be recording an album later this year that is planned for early 2024. The Illness have been playing music together in some form for several years, but since recently establishing a more consistent line up they have played alongside the likes of Snapped Ankles, Kelley Stoltz, The Stroppies, Holiday Ghosts, Cindy & Times New Viking.
